Daily Thread: Piece No. 3 (Bark and Bramble)

Bonnie Sennott January 26, 2020

For the third piece in Daily Thread (my 2019 daily stitch journal), I chose the theme of “bark and bramble.” During the winter months, criss-crossing branches and brushy undergrowth dominate the view at the edge of the yard. My eyes take in the tangle of meandering lines each morning as I do yoga and later when I sit down to stitch. Whether seen against the white of snow or the tawny color of the field beyond the trees, the jumble of dark lines has a stark beauty — a beauty that comes only in winter. Once the trees leaf out in spring, everything changes.

I began this piece on February 16, 2019 and completed it on March 10 (Days 47–69 of the project). From my baskets of Valdani threads, I selected a palette of browns and greys, which I began stitching using meandering chain stitches. Later I added small stars and began layering the lines of chain stitches over one another. As often happens, I changed the orientation several times as i worked, before settling on the final composition.

My next post will take a look at Daily Thread: Piece No. 4, which had the theme of "transition."
